AFTER YEARS IN THE CATHODIC PROTECTION INDUSTRY, MATT MCANALLY STARTED HIS OWN COMPANY—INNOV8 DRILLING SERVICES.

And this month, we had the opportunity to sit down and discuss with McAnally the trials and tribulations of being a new entrepreneur in a competitive field. In this interview, we also uncovered how Versa-Drill rigs contributed to his success and how he continues to grow with the powerful 2022 V-140X from our extensive line of drilling rigs.

VD: How has your first year as an entrepreneur been?

MM: It’s been going extremely well. We’re a small company with only two employees right now, so I’m on the road a lot. It was stressful at first, but that roller coaster is starting to ease out.

VD: What made you decide to start your own company?

MM: I’ve been doing cathodic protection for another company for the past seven years, and I always wanted to do it on my own at some point, but I had to figure out how to get the right equipment. I knew the work would fall in place after that.

VD: Speaking of the right equipment, which Versa-Drill rigs have you purchased to get your jobs done?

MM: I have an old one, a 2008 V-100. I started the company with that rig, and I just recently purchased the 2022 V-140X and am looking to buy a third this year.

VD: What made you decide to invest in our line of drilling rigs?

MM: The customer service and time frame. Versa-Drill was one of the only companies who built the rig in a timely manner. A lot of other places said a year out, which was way too long for me. For Versa-Drill it only takes half the time, six or seven months. Also, the rigs are very versatile. Plus it’s easy to train personnel on those rigs.

VD: What was the biggest advantage you found using the V-140X?

MM: The 300 foot carousel. You have 300 feet of pipe in the carousel, basically it eliminates one guy from having to be up there helping work the rig, so he can do another task. When you work with a small team it makes a huge difference.

VD: Can you describe an experience with the service department and how that went for you?

MM: The experience was really good. Versa-Drill has everything in stock, and they’re great about getting parts shipped to you overnight.

VD: Do you have any exemplary moments you’d like to share when Versa-Drill really stood out to you?

MM: I would say the people there treat you more as family than as a customer. When I went up there, they introduced me to everyone who I had been talking to over the phone daily. It helped me put a face with the name and get to know everyone better.

In general, they not only try to make sure everything is done right for you, but they go above and beyond.
